Más información sobre el libro

For half a century, Sarah Josepha Hale was the most influential woman in America, serving as the editor of Godey's Lady's Book. She shaped cultural norms, guiding women and men on reading, cooking, behavior, and thought. Two decades before the Seneca Falls convention, Hale advocated for women's education, employment, and financial independence. Her impact on nineteenth-century culture was profound; she promoted American authors and advanced the reputations of literary figures like Edgar Allan Poe and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Hale authored the first antislavery novel, compiled the first women's history book, and created the beloved verse "Mary Had a Little Lamb." As a social reformer, she opened doors for women in leadership roles within charitable organizations. Hale's campaign transformed Thanksgiving into a national holiday, a vision embraced by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. She also introduced the Christmas tree and the white wedding dress to American traditions. While many of Hale's equity issues have been addressed, the value of women's roles in the domestic sphere has diminished. Her beliefs about women's obligations to family and moral leadership remain relevant today, particularly as many women feel let down by modern feminism. "Lady Editor" re-creates the life of this pivotal figure, whose contributions to writing, editing, and early feminism are central to American history.
