Anna Ellington was born in the Wellington County House of Industry and Refuge, known as the "Poor House" near Fergus, Ontario, Canada. Later she was bound out to a wealthy family in Toronto. In 1904, Anna returns to Fergus as a beautiful young woman in search of her family. She hopes to learn why her mother ended up in the County Poor House. During her visit to the area she encounters several local characters and finds romance, mystery, wealth, intrigue and answers to many questions.
