The book explores the historical misunderstandings between Europeans and African societies upon contact, particularly regarding leadership models. It argues that medicine, rather than colonial rulers or divine kings, has been the foundational aspect of governance across equatorial Africa. Through ethnographic comparisons of around forty cultural groups, it highlights how fertility shrines, rainmaking charms, and inherited drums play crucial roles in the political and social structures of these communities, emphasizing the significance of indigenous practices in leadership.
