He commits his compositions to paper with a breathtaking nonchalance almost unparalleled among Baroque artists. At the same time, he is a pioneering experimenter in the field of printmaking. The monotype process which he developed was still being used in the 19th century by artists such as Edgar Degas and Paul Gauguin.
