Set against the backdrop of a tiny Finnish village, the story follows Esko Vaananen, who is consumed by unrequited love and a vision of a magnificent skyscraper. This vision ignites a lifelong quest for beauty, leading him through tumultuous events such as the Bolshevik revolution and the vibrant Jazz Age of New York City. Esko's journey intertwines his artistic aspirations with personal sacrifice, culminating in a Faustian deal with a gangster, as he relentlessly seeks both artistic perfection and the love he cannot attain.
