George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) was a prolific English novelist and war correspondent, renowned for his historical adventure stories popular in the late 19th century. Born in Trumpington, near Cambridge, he was a sickly child who became an avid reader during his long illnesses. He attended Westminster School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he excelled in sports. Leaving university early, he volunteered for the Army Hospital Commissariat during the Crimean War, witnessing the harsh conditions faced by British soldiers. His vivid letters home were published, sparking his career as a special correspondent, an early form of war journalism. After marrying Elizabeth Finucane and having four children, he began writing articles for the Standard newspaper following her death in 1865. Henty reported on numerous conflicts, including the Austro-Italian War and the Franco-Prussian War, and traveled extensively, advocating for the British Empire throughout his life. His storytelling skills were honed through tales shared with his children, leading to his first children's book, "Out on the Pampas," published in 1870. Henty authored over 122 books, primarily for children, alongside adult novels, non-fiction, and short stories. He also edited the Union Jack, a weekly magazine for boys, and was illustrated by Walter Stanley Paget, a noted artist of the time.
