Isabella Lucy Bird, married name Bishop FRGS (1831-1904), was a pioneering English explorer, writer, photographer, and naturalist. Along with Fanny Jane Butler, she co-founded the John Bishop Memorial Hospital in Srinagar and became the first woman elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Born on 15 October 1831 in Yorkshire, she was the daughter of Rev. Edward Bird and Dora Lawson. Bird's family moved frequently due to her father's clerical appointments and health issues, living in various locations including Maidenhead and Tattenhall, where her siblings were born. Known for her outspoken nature from a young age, she famously confronted a local MP during a campaign. Her father's controversial views led to a decline in his congregation, prompting another move to Birmingham, where he faced further hostility. Bird's health was fragile throughout her childhood, suffering from a spinal complaint and insomnia, which led to a recommendation for an open-air lifestyle. Consequently, she learned to ride and row early on. Her education was primarily from her parents; her father instilled a love for botany, while her mother taught a diverse range of subjects. Despite the restrictive evangelical environment, Bird's intelligence and curiosity about the world flourished, shaping her adventurous spirit.
