Focusing on her impactful reform efforts, Elizabeth Fry, known as Betsy, was instrumental in advocating for humane treatment of prisoners, with the backing of Queen Victoria. Her extensive diaries reveal her dedication to social issues, including the establishment of a nightly shelter for the homeless after a tragic incident in 1819. In 1824, she founded the Brighton District Visiting Society, which mobilized volunteers to assist impoverished families, a model that inspired similar initiatives throughout Britain.
