Robert Dowling, a pivotal figure in Australian art, was the first locally trained artist and renowned for his portraits reflecting colonial society, as well as his depictions of Aborigines and biblical themes. After migrating to Tasmania at seven, he showcased his artistic talent early on and became a professional portrait painter by 24. His formal studies in London began in 1857, leading to significant exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the distinction of being the first expatriate to send works back to Australia between 1859 and 1882.
