Exploring the tension between Enlightenment thought and premodern philosophical orthodoxy, this work examines the concept of individual autonomy against the backdrop of intrinsic hierarchies. The author argues that Enlightenment thinkers, while promoting self-determination, ultimately fail to provide a solid philosophical foundation for freedom. By contrasting these empiricist views with Platonic hierarchy, the study posits that a hierarchical ontology better supports rational self-determination. It also challenges the notion that hierarchy is merely a power-driven imposition, highlighting its deeper metaphysical significance.
