The American Rhythm

Mary Austin recognized the threat to Native American myths and culture, dedicating herself to preserving their songs and poems through what she termed "reëxpressions." She emphasized the importance of the creator's life and environment in understanding the rhythm and meaning of these works. Her research highlighted the integral role of tribal dancing in the performance of these narratives. This passion culminated in lectures and the publication of "The American Rhythm," earning her recognition as an Associate in Native American Literature at the School of American Research in Santa Fe.
