Focusing on the military's adaptation to Indonesia's new democratic landscape post-Suharto, this study highlights the significant role of civilian conflicts in shaping military involvement in politics. Through an analysis of rivalries among major Muslim groups from 1998 to 2004, it reveals how these tensions allowed the military to assert its influence. However, the stabilization of civilian governance after 2004 has led to the military's diminishing political role. The book ultimately suggests that the future of military engagement in politics hinges on the strength of democratic institutions led by civilians.
