The study focuses on identifying Viridans group Streptococci (VGS), pathogens linked to serious infections, through advanced molecular methods. It examines the effectiveness of sequencing helix 54 of domain III of 23S rRNA and compares it with the 16S-23S intergenic region. The research successfully identified 25 SGV strains to the species level, particularly within the anginosus, mutans, and sanguinis subgroups, while encountering challenges with the mitis subgroup. This approach highlights the potential of molecular techniques for accurate species-level identification of VGS.
