An eyewitness account vividly describes the awe-inspiring comet observed in December 1680, capturing the fear and fascination it evoked among people. In response to the ensuing panic, Enlightenment thinker Pierre Bayle penned this work in 1682, aiming to challenge superstition's role in politics. Notably, Bayle proposed the radical idea that a moral society of atheists could exist, a concept unprecedented in political discourse. This translation, based on a critical edition of the original French text, includes an interpretive essay highlighting Bayle's significance in Enlightenment thought.
