The Widow Chambers is a composite of many women who came out to California by wagon train for the 1849 Gold Rush. After her husband dies on the trail, the Widow supports herself in Sacramento by selling fruit pies on the streets. She is there for floods and fires that periodically swept through the city, and she works side by side with many people of her class...people who have been left out of the history books
