Más información sobre el libro
In 2014, the Licking County Library initiated a project to gather information on local veterans, uncovering remarkable yet forgotten stories. By 2016, the library launched a weekly column in the Newark Advocate to showcase these veterans. This compilation features fifty-one articles, enhanced with editing and photographs. The letters and quotes included maintain their original spellings and terms, with clarifications provided where necessary. Selecting which stories to include was challenging, as the goal was to represent the diverse experiences of veterans throughout the county's history, encompassing various branches of the armed services. The narratives focus on the veterans' personal journeys rather than detailed accounts of wars or battles. These individuals walked the streets of Licking County, experiencing its landscapes and communities. Many rest in local or national cemeteries, while some remain missing in action. They came from various backgrounds—laborers, lawyers, nurses, and more—encompassing men, women, and people of different races and origins. The saying goes that people die twice: once when their body perishes and again when their name is forgotten. It is our hope that the stories of Licking County's veterans will always be remembered and honored.
