Rhon is young when he learns of his parents’ decision to leave Jamaica—a decision that was set in motion even before he was born. In America, he and his family quickly learn that life in the land of opportunity is full of adversity. His family faces hardship, violence and a struggle around black identity. Four years later, he finally finds a sense of family in the men and women he serves with during two Iraq War deployments. America is becoming home to him and though he wasn’t born a patriot, he nevertheless becomes one.But soon he finds out that the “American dream” is not what it seems to be, for immigrants in its pursuit. It takes more than it gives. Unbecoming American is the story of an average citizen’s service to country and his stand for what is right and good. His bittersweet story is one consisting of sacrifices, triumphs and a disappointment that drives him to make a drastic decision in protest of what seems to be the real America.
