Melissa's Magic Ride is a beautifully illustrated story book for children who are coping with loss. The protagonist , Melissa, is a  girl who mourns the death of her father and goes on a magical dreamlike journey which has healing effects. Dr. Laura Slap-Shelton, Psy.D. is a published psychologist who personally experienced the loss of her husband and the father of her daughter. Making up healing stories became an important way to help her daughter process her feelings about having lost her father when she was very young. Melissa's Magic Ride is dedicated to all children coping with loss and to the loved ones who help them make sense of their Melissa's father died when she was very young. Assigned to tell her class about her father, she confronts her sadness at not being able to remember him. Looking at photo albums and hearing stories about him helps, but does not give her the deep sense of personal connection she craves.With her report due the next day, she goes to bed hoping to somehow meet her father. The adventure begins as Melissa wakes to find her bed flying through the night sky to a new worlds and the meeting she has been waiting for and awakes with an inner knowledge of her father's love.
