Religion and law have historically served as significant means of social control and change, deeply interconnected in shaping societal structures. Assam, a state in India, is characterized by its diverse religious communities and is governed by the Rule of Law under the Indian Constitution, which upholds secularism. However, religious intolerance and conflicts between traditional beliefs and modern legal systems have led to disruptions in law and order in Assam over recent decades. This study examines the validity of contemporary legal institutions in promoting religious tolerance among local communities, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional beliefs and modern societal needs. It explores the evolution of various religions in Assam, analyzing the legal framework to assess its secular nature and alignment with the religious sentiments of the populace. Additionally, the research highlights instances of anti-secular activities and incorporates insights from legal experts to enhance understanding of the relationship between law and religion in the region.
