Saint-Libéral is a small village in Corrèze, near the Dordogne, known for livestock farming and mixed agriculture. With ten hectares and ten cows, one is respected as Jean-Edouard Vialhe, who rules over his estate and family: his wife and their three children, Pierre-Edouard, Louise, and Berthe. In this France that had hardly changed in the 19th century, new "revolutionary" ideas and techniques gradually emerge and take hold with the new century. The old world begins to crack under the pressure of these changes.
