A nobleman faces the consequences of his youthful wrongdoing when the girl he seduced and abandoned some years earlier is put on trial in a murder case. Initially conceived as a love story, Tolstoy's last novel, published in 1899, is a dark masterpiece in which the whole of Imperial Russian society is tried and found wanting. Resurrection moves from the salons and country estates of the aristocracy to courtrooms and government offices, brothels and prisons; from Moscow and St Petersburg by road, rail and route march to the penal settlements of Siberia. Its pages are peopled with convicts and gaolers, revolutionaries and religious sectaries, soldiers, labourers and lawyers, peasants, priests and prostitutes. While for Prince Nekhlyudov and Katusha Maslova salvation through love proves problematic, the journey into exile becomes one of self-discovery and spiritual transformation.

1898/1899 hat Leo N. Tolstoi seinen ein Jahrzehnt zuvor begonnenen - 1897 aber ganz beiseitegelegten - Roman "Auferstehung" doch noch vollendet. Mit dem Erlös wollte er die christlichen Duchoborzen, die jeglichen Militärdienst verweigerten, bei ihrer Auswanderung unterstützen. Fürst Nechljudow - Hauptfigur des Romans und zugleich ein literarisches "Alter Ego" des Dichters - erkennt seine persönliche Schuld am traurigen Schicksal des ehemaligen Dienstmädchens Katjuscha Maslowa aus der Klasse der Ärmsten, empört sich über die staatlichen Gewaltapparate (Justiz im Dienst der Besitzenden) und die Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber den Leiden der Beherrschten, möchte das Unrecht der bestehenden Eigentumsverhältnisse beenden, überwindet in der Begegnung mit politischen Gefangenen seine pauschalen Vorurteile gegenüber Revolutionären, zeigt Sympathien für einen gewaltfreien Sozialismus und ersehnt ein wahrhaftiges Christsein jenseits der Strafreligion des klerikalen Machtkomplexes. Zu seiner hier neu edierten Übersetzung der unzensierten Fassung (1. Auflage) vermerkte Wladimir Czumikow 1900: Einige meiner russischen "Landsleute sahen in dem Roman nichts mehr als eine Beschimpfung des russischen Gerichts und Verhöhnung der russischen Kirche und sahen in mir, dem Übersetzer, einen Vaterlandsverräter, der dem irregehenden, senil-verblendeten Autor helfen wolle, das Ansehen Rußlands in den Augen des Auslandes zu schädigen ... Als wenn es sich in dem Roman überhaupt um russische Zustände handelte, und nicht um menschliche Einrichtungen, denen der Dichter bloß darum ein nationales Gewand umlegt, um ihnen die Greifbarkeit des Konkreten zu verleihen! Und als wenn das Ansehen aller Geheimräte und Bischöfe oder Konsistorialräte der Welt überhaupt irgendwie in Betracht käme oder berücksichtigt werden dürfte, wenn es gilt, so traurige Wahrheiten, so tiefe Schäden der menschlichen und nicht nur allein der russischen Gesellschaft aufzudecken, wie der Roman sie - allerdings schonungslos - aufdeckt!"
