This book reflects the shift in design paradigm in automobile industry. It presents future innovations, often referred as “automotive systems engineering”. These cause fundamental innovations in the field of driver assistance systems and electro-mobility as well as fundamental changes in the architecture of the vehicles. New driving functionalities can only be realized if the software programs of multiple electronic control units work together correctly. This volume presents the new and innovative methods which are mandatory to master the complexity of the vehicle of the future.

This book takes a look at fully automated, autonomous vehicles and discusses many open questions: How can autonomous vehicles be integrated into the current transportation system with diverse users and human drivers? Where do automated vehicles fall under current legal frameworks? What risks are associated with automation and how will society respond to these risks? How will the marketplace react to automated vehicles and what changes may be necessary for companies? Experts from Germany and the United States define key societal, engineering, and mobility issues related to the automation of vehicles. They discuss the decisions programmers of automated vehicles must make to enable vehicles to perceive their environment, interact with other road users, and choose actions that may have ethical consequences. The authors further identify expectations and concerns that will form the basis for individual and societal acceptance of autonomous driving. While the safety benefits of suchvehicles are tremendous, the authors demonstrate that these benefits will only be achieved if vehicles have an appropriate safety concept at the heart of their design. Realizing the potential of automated vehicles to reorganize traffic and transform mobility of people and goods requires similar care in the design of vehicles and networks. By covering all of these topics, the book aims to provide a current, comprehensive, and scientifically sound treatment of the emerging field of “autonomous driving".

Wie werden autonome Fahrzeuge in das aktuelle Verkehrssystem integriert? Wie erfolgt ihre rechtliche Einbettung? Welche Risiken bestehen und wie wird mit diesen umgegangen? Und welche Akzeptanz seitens der Gesellschaft sowie des Marktes kann hinsichtlich dieser Entwicklungen überhaupt erwartet werden? Das vorliegende Buch gibt Antworten auf ein breites Spektrum dieser und weiterer Fragen. Expertinnen und Experten aus Deutschland und den USA beschreiben aus ingenieur- und gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Sicht zentrale Themen im Zusammenhang mit der Automatisierung von Fahrzeugen im öffentlichen Straßenverkehr. Sie zeigen auf, welche „Entscheidungen“ einem autonomen Fahrzeug abverlangt werden beziehungsweise welche „Ethik“ programmiert werden muss. Das Buch bietet somit eine aktuelle, umfassende und wissenschaftlich fundierte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema „Autonomes Fahren“.

In the context of renewed global interest in the development of vocational skills, policy makers in many countries as well as representatives of technical organisations often hope to reform existing training systems by borrowing models and policies that seem to work elsewhere. One of these prominent models is that of ‘National Qualifications Framework’, the use of which now spans the entire globe. On a much smaller scale, the ‘Dual Model’ of vocational training – a systematic combination of school and workplace-based learning that is common in a number of countries in Western Europe – has also gained attention in international cooperation. Bringing together contributions from authors involved in both the theory and practice of vocational skills training development, this volume analyses the challenges that are tied to the transfer of these two dominant models in the context of international cooperation, sheds light on how they are being implemented, and discusses alternatives to the standard approaches to policy transfer.

In the face of accelerated economic globalisation, many of the industries in economically less developed countries have become more technology-intensive. Skill formation processes, both inside and outside firms, are therefore changing. This study scrutinises such transformations by comparing – from the perspective of historical institutionalism – the skill formation regimes of the garment industries in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It sheds light on the differences between the trajectories of the in-firm skill formation regimes of the two countries, and reveals the important part that varying paths of educational development in both countries have played in shaping these trajectories. At the same time, the study shows how, in both countries, state-led skill formation regimes have been transformed not only by market forces and the growing importance of corporate business interests, but also by the social demand for educational credentials.

Das Buch zeigt auf, wie solche Verbünde in der Schweiz funktionieren, diskutiert Erfolgsmodelle und macht deutlich, welches Potenzial diese Kooperation von Lehrbetrieben in unterschiedlichen Branchen für die Berufsbildung bietet.

Fahrerassistenzsysteme unterstützen den Fahrer in seiner Fahraufgabe und entlasten ihn dadurch gezielt. Viele Experten erwarten, dass Fahrerassistenzsysteme zur Sicherheit des Straßenverkehrs wesentlich beitragen werden. Zentrale wissenschaftliche und industrielle Herausforderungen bestehen zur Zeit in der Erforschung und Entwicklung maschineller Wahrnehmungsfähigkeiten, die eine angemessene Erfassung der Umwelt und deren fahrergerechte Integration in geeignete Fahrfunktionen leisten. Dieser Band basiert auf ausgewählten Vorträgen eines Workshops in Walting (Altmühltal) und macht deren Inhalt in erweiterter Fassung zugänglich. In bislang nicht vorliegender Interdisziplinarität diskutieren Experten aus Wissenschaft und Praxis unterschiedlichste Ansätze aus vielfältigen Bereichen wie der maschinellen Wahrnehmung, Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion, Wissensrepräsentation, Funktionsentwicklung und Wirtschaftsethik. Über die fachlich-technische Auseinandersetzung mit Fahrerassistenzsystemen hinaus wird damit auch ein Beitrag zum notwendigen Diskurs über deren Auswirkung und gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz geleistet.
