In a digitally-driven world, engineering influences every facet of human life, presenting a broader array of design challenges than ever before. As the distinctions between engineering, management, politics, education, and art blur within complex socio-technical systems, it becomes essential to reassess our understanding of engineering practice, expertise, and responsibility. This book posits that the future of engineering will emerge from an ongoing dialogue among diverse stakeholders engaged in the design and application of technical artifacts, rather than from a static, closed discipline. Drawing from papers presented at the 2016 forum for Philosophy, Engineering and Technology (fPET) conference in Nuremberg, Germany, it includes insights from philosophers, engineers, and managers across academia and industry. The contributors address a range of pressing issues in engineering, including problem-solving strategies, value-sensitive design, experimentation, simulation, engineering education, interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainability, risk, and privacy.
