The story follows Razumou, an orphan who believes all of Russia is his family, as he navigates the turbulent political landscape during a time of revolution. Initially choosing neutrality amidst his classmates' fervent revolutionary sentiments, he faces a moral dilemma when Haldin, a classmate involved in a political assassination, seeks refuge with him.
