From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr comes a stunningly ambitious novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose lives intersect in occupied France during World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of the locks. After going blind at six, her father creates a model of their neighborhood, allowing her to memorize it and navigate the streets. When the Germans occupy Paris, they flee to Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure's great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea. Meanwhile, in Germany, an orphan boy named Werner grows up with his sister, Jutta, and becomes fascinated with a radio he finds. His talent for building and fixing radios earns him a place at a brutal military academy, turning him into a tracker of the Resistance. Werner's journey takes him from the heart of Hitler Youth to the outskirts of Russia, ultimately leading him to Saint-Malo, where his path converges with Marie-Laure's. Doerr's exquisite blend of imagination and observation is electric, as he deftly weaves their stories together, illuminating the ways people strive to be good to one another against all odds. This novel, ten years in the making, stands as his most ambitious and dazzling work.
